If you are interested in more traffic for your site, you will probably be on the mailing list of several internet marketers.
This is no surprise, as they are very adept at gathering big lists of people wanting to make money online.

One thing you will hear a lot of them talk about is the Joint Venture, or JV, where you work with a partner, both bringing something to the table, to produce the end result of a product and good campaign.
All well and good, but the more of these email lists you join, the more you seem to notice that they promote each other’s products.
Marketer A will tell you that he ‘got on the phone to Marketer B’ who told him about his latest secret, and they agreed to share it.

Then you’ll read that Marketer B has ‘got off the phone’ with Marketer C *and* Marketer A, and the 3 of them have got a deal which you must get in on.
Hmm…

This immediately creates an impression of an insiders club, where the only people with access to talk these marketers is the same marketers themselves.

However, this should put you off the idea of Joint Ventures for 2 massive reasons…

Firstly, in the emails I mentioned above, although the marketers may well be talking to each other and promoting each other’s products, most of the time they are not actually creating anything together.
This is an important difference, as it means that Marketer A is an affiliate for Marketer B and vice versa.
That may seem like a joint venture, but in fact it’s just effective affiliate selling, it is *not* strictly speaking a Joint Venture.

The other thing about these marketers, is that they are experts in the field of internet marketing, they are not experts in niche subjects.
Take dentistry for example, the big internet marketing names will not be experts on it, but they will know full well how profitable the dentistry market can be.

This means that if you can create a genuinely valuable product for the dentistry world, not only will the internet marketers be interested they’ll probably be falling over themselves to get to you first!

This is because they can do a genuine joint venture with you, where they will use the skills and knowledge to create the product in a form that they know will sell, and make money for both them and you.
After the money has been made, they will then use your story to promote themselves, and use it to create another product to sell.
You will be profiting from this too, so it’s a double whammy.

That’s why the big internet marketers *are* approachable for JVs, it’s just that they shouldn’t be about internet marketing itself, as they already have the knowledge and contacts themselves in that field.

When search engines go about ranking how they display their search results, they have always needed a system to work out what any website is about.

So, they designed robot ’spiders’ which trawl the internet, using their own programming to evaluate sites.

It’s this which people try to take advantage of to get higher rankings.

And why shouldn’t they?

After all, there is no internet police deciding how you design your site, so surely any sensible business person should work at their site to make it seem as relevant as possible to the search engines, and therefore get more free traffic, right?

Well, sort of.

In the early days, search engines would maybe look mostly at the text on the page, so this led to the phenomenon of people putting their selected keywords all over their sites, but in the same colour as the background, so they would appear to the spider robots but not real visitors.

The search engines caught on to that, and not only did it stop working, any site would be punished or delisted if it was found doing this.

Then the focus switched to the tags in the html code.

These are there precisely to give an idea of what the site is about, but again it led to stuffing them with keywords, negating the effectiveness.

The next development was to judge websites by the amount of links they had with other sites, firstly one way links, then reciprocal links, then one way links but only from relevant sites.

This cat and mouse game has always gone on - the biggest search engine Google has a mantra of ‘be nice’, and strives to provide genuine results for users.

This is logical, as genuine results mean people will keep using Google, which now has shareholders to answer to.

The marketer is not interested in ‘being nice’, rather is much more interested in ‘making sales’, and this has led to the so called ‘black hat’ side of the fence where people use the latest tricks to try and get good rankings with Google.

In my view the best way to get the best ranking is to provide what Google want, which is genuine updated content on the subject at hand.

The latest Google favourite is Latent Symantic Index, or LSI, which means that rather than seeing a keyword phrase over and over on the page, they look for words that could naturally expect to also be seen on a genuine page about that phrase.

It’s a complicated programme, and Google unsurprisingly are coy about revealing details, but it theoretically does favour site with genuine content.

Yes, you need to set your site up a certain way to make it easier for Google to rank it, but if your site simply does what it says it does, you won’t have to cheat search engines for more web traffic.

It may not sound very helpful to say ’sometimes’, but in truth there are a lot of variables.

It depends on factors I’ll mention, and anyone that gives you a straight ‘yes’ or ‘no’ is showing a lack of understanding of the intricacies involved.

OK, so some paid traffic sources you can write off straight away are adverts which offer 10,000 visitors to your site for X amount of dollars.

They are a total waste of time and money, because the people coming to your site will be paid to do so, say 5 cents a click.

They have no interest in your offer, will not pay any attention, so forget these offers.

Similarly if anyone says they will get you top rankings in ‘100 search engines’, steer well clear.
There is one search engine currently ruling the roost, Google, and maybe 4 others that can bring you worthwhile traffic.

But 100? I don’t think so, and a simple email asking them which 100 search engines they are talking about will probably get no response, a clear sign to hold on to your money.

Not all paid traffic is worthless though.

You may go for the pay per click, or PPC, method.

Some marketers swear by this method, and use this alone to drive traffic to their site.

With pay per click you can target the visitors with laser focus, meaning it is money that is tightly spent. This is done by setting up the adverts so that they only appear to people who have typed in your specific keyword.

Even then you only get charged once someone clicks, so you are putting 2 levels of qualification in place before you spend a penny - firstly that they have typed your keyphrase in, and secondly that your ad has appealed to them.

So if a marketer knows that a targeted visitor from his selected market is worth 1 dollar to him on average, as long as he spends less than 1 dollar on average per visitor, he is making money.
Once that model is up and running, you can then theoretically just ramp it up.

However, and this is the key with any paid traffic, you do need to know this figure of how much each visitor is worth to you. That means proper and lengthy testing and tracking. If you only have a vague idea of cost versus profit, you are likely to be on the wrong end of the equation!

Another paid option is to advertise in ezines.

If the newsletter goes to a big list of targeted prospects, you may well find that the cost of the advert is more than outweighed by the sales.

Again, proper tracking and analysis is essential.

So you can see that the paid traffic choices can go from the scams and waste of money to laser efficient sales generators - due research is needed before you can decide if the increased traffic is actually worth the money.

The first way is to leave comments on other blogs.

Not all blogs allow people to leave comments, but plenty do as it creates an interactivity which retains the interest of the blog’s readers.

This is great for you, because if the blog is in the same niche as your target market, that makes the readers *your* target market too!

Leave a comment which provides good value, or maybe warrants a discussion, and readers will want to follow the link back to your site, especially if you use good anchor text, i.e. the words which form the actual link, rather than ‘click here.’

A second way this comment function works, is that if you pick a blog which is not only in your target market, but is well ranked with Google, the Google robots will follow the link to your site, and the fact that the linking blog is relevant in the eyes of Google, means that they will consider your site more relevant too.

This is really powerful, because you are getting a double positive double whammy from the same effort.

Some people advise that if you go for another blog which has a high Page Rank with Google, it doesn’t matter what the subject matter is, if you leave a comment and a link, the PR will link to your site as well.

I’m not so sure about that advice. Firstly it’s not proven, and Google are likely to change the goalposts at anytime with their ranking decisions. They have done before and surely will do again. You may find find that if the other blog is unrelated in subject matter, it may *harm* your search engine results.

Secondly, you lose the element of readers being interested in your site, as it won’t be relevant to them.

Since you get the double hit from blogs that *are* in your niche, I would stick to those.

A third way to use other people’s blogs is to tap into the fact that the owner has built up the readership of the blog.

If you offer an affiliate programme, which you should anyway, then you can offer the owner a special deal just for readers of their blog.

The owner wins as they get a pile of commissions on the sales, and at a higher rate than your normal affiliate rate.

The reader wins because they are getting good information in their subject of interest.

You win, because you are diverting traffic to your site, which the other blog owner has done the work to develop and qualify.

So you can see, although having your own blog is well advised as a traffic generator, there are simple yet effective ways to increase website traffic from other people’s blogs.

You may have guessed that I am not saying you should forget about setting up your site correctly for seo purposes.

It’s important to pay attention to items like proper html coding site maps and a linking strategy.

You should always take care of these factors for long term search engine results, so called organic traffic.

What I am saying though, is that it may be possible to get a traffic generating vehicle to a better ranking than your actual site.

Let me explain.

One example is by using articles. Google particularly likes certain article websites, examples being ezinearticles, goarticles and searchwarp, and spiders them daily. Articles on these sites are quite capable of getting page 1 rankings, and within as little as a few days.

That’s not marketing hype or exaggeration, it’s well documented fact.

You do need to pick your keyword phrase correctly, but if you do so, and write a well constructed article submitted to a site like the ones mentioned above, it’s quite possible that your article will get a good search engine ranking.

People searching your phrase will see the article, and click on the link at the bottom to get to your site.

Yes, they do have to get over one extra hurdle in that they need to read to the bottom of the article and click on your site, but if you’ve composed your article correctly with genuine content, they will.

Another great traffic generator which you can use in the search engines is the blog.

Blogs are great for being able to immediately post and publish your content.

You can build a following of people who want to hear what you say, and will pass your blog details around the web. Publishing feeds allow other websites to use your content - great exposure without you lifting a finger once you’ve made the post.

This in turn can mean that your blog gets better rankings than your actual site.

This is not a problem, in fact it’s what I am talking about, using the blog to get good rankings, and then generating the traffic *via* that blog to your site.

Unlike articles, you also have more control over the blogs layout, so can monetize it as a by product of it generating traffic.

Another way to use blogs is to take advantage of other peoples’s blogs.

If they have a good ranking for your keyword phrase, leaving a comment and link to your site will not only help your own site’s rankings, it will get you traffic from the visitors that read the other blog, as they are by default interested in the subject matter.

So you can see, sometimes it helps to use specific traffic generators away from your site to get more search engine traffic.

Of course you would love to have a flood of traffic coming to your site from online generation, and this is obviously never to be overlooked, but the idea of going offline to generate traffic is something which *is* overlooked - to a staggering degree.

If you think about it in the days before the internet, all business promotion was done offline.
It may be hard to think of a time when the internet wasn’t as all pervasive as it is now, but it really wasn’t that long ago.

Global major brands have jumped at the chance to use the web for business, as you’d expect, but have they suddenly stopped using offline methods? Of course not!

You see the same adverts on TV, and at the movies, and on billboards.
You see the same adverts on the side of buses, and put through your letterbox, and slotted into your paper.

There is only one reason why you still see these methods used - they work.

If they stopped working, the global brands would stop using them, it’s as simple as that.

The business know that for every dollar they spend, they get more than that dollar back in profit, so it would be business lunacy for them not to carry on with those methods!

The classified advert still has massive potential.

A correctly structured small block of words can have vast amounts of people wanting to give you business, because you have targeted your readers.

Online classifieds do work, but less so, because a lot of people online go to classifieds with more of an interest to place ads rather than read them.

This is totally different offline, where people will see classifieds in the magazines which appeal to their interest, so they actively seek out the classifieds to see what they offer.

Direct mail works in the same way, and internet marketers are leaving huge amounts of money on the table, by just not applying this method.

Many people simply have not considered it as a possibility.

If you have a website that has local relevance, make sure all the local people know about it!
How about a simple postcard letterbox campaign?

One massive advantage the internet has over the old methods, is cost.

Back then as you can imagine, the cost of a full colour multi-page brochure was prohibitive, an you’d have to lay out that cost before you saw any money coming back in.

Good profit potential, but risky for losses if you get it wrong.

Online, you can put a full colour sales pitch together which is a long as you want, totally for free!
This means that for your offline promotion, you can rely on cheap postcards and classifieds - if they are worded correctly your sole aim is to get them to the site, and it’s there that your pitch will begin.

It’s amazing how many people do not take advantage of the offline promotion methods.
It’s easy to get caught up in SEO or other online traffic generation, when the answer may well be going offline to increase website traffic.
